The story of Saint Jarlath's Park

St Jarlath's Park, which everyone calls Tuam Stadium, was opened on 21 May 1950 with a blessing from the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Walsh, and two matches on the day: Cavan against Mayo, and Galway against Dublin. It takes its name from Jarlath, the sixth-century saint counted as Tuam's first bishop.

For decades it was the principal ground of Galway football and hosted Connacht senior finals. At its height it held around 26,000 people; safety rules have cut that in stages, most recently to 6,700. A redevelopment with a new 6,400-seat stand and facilities has planning permission and a local committee is raising the money.

The stadium is 500 metres south of the Square, past the Dublin Road; the club that plays here, Tuam Stars, switched from association to Gaelic football in 1889.
