The story of Tuam Golf Club
Golf came to Tuam in the luggage of two local businessmen who had holidayed in Harrogate, learned the game there and brought back clubs and balls. The club they founded opened in 1904 with sixty members on land at Cloonascragh, off the Athenry Road, that one of them owned. It moved to the Kilgarriff family's land at Mayfield in 1937 and joined the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1940.
In the 1940s Christy O'Connor Senior, later one of the great Irish professionals, came to the club as its professional and gave lessons to the town. The move to the present course at Barnacurragh, near the original ground, came in the mid-1970s, with Eddie Hackett as designer; a clubhouse with bar, restaurant and pro shop followed in 1991, Christy O'Connor Junior advised on later improvements, and Ken Kearney oversaw further work between 2007 and 2009. Women were admitted as full members in 1992.
The course is par 72 and 6,138 metres, tree-lined on most fairways with water on three holes; the par-3 fifteenth is the signature hole. It has hosted Connacht club finals and, in 2015, the Irish Open Boys Championship.
