The story of Tuam Stars GAA

Tuam's first football club, formed in December 1887, set out to play association football. That did not sit well with the mood of the time, and the Tuam Herald ran a campaign in print for a proper code of Gaelic rules. In February 1889 the club gave in, renamed itself Tuam Stars and played its first Gaelic match on St Patrick's Day that year.

It grew into one of the most successful clubs in Galway. Between 1953 and 1960 it won the county championship seven years running, with Seán Purcell and Frank Stockwell in the side, two names now carried by streets in the town. The parish has a second club, Cortoon Shamrocks, in its western half.
